Parkinson’s Law

“Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”

And, Parkinson’s Law of Triviality:

“Parkinson dramatizes his Law of Triviality with a committee’s deliberations on a nuclear power plant, contrasting it to deliberation on a bicycle shed. As he put it, “The time spent on any item of the agenda will be in inverse proportion to the sum involved.” A nuclear reactor is used because it is so vastly expensive and complicated that an average person cannot understand it, so they assume that those working on it understand it. Even those with strong opinions often withhold them for fear of being shown to be insufficiently informed. On the other hand, everyone can visualize a bicycle shed, so planning one can result in endless discussions because everyone involved wants to add his or her touch and show that they have contributed.

Great Steven Spielberg Quote – applies to all creatives

This is an interview from after Close Encounters became a hit. And I think this quote applies to just about every creative endeavor.

“I think the toughest thing for a director to do is to know what he wants. It’s not how to get what you want, it’s knowing what you want.

So many people make movies, and they don’t know what you want. They say, I think I want the person to scream now, or I think I want you to act like you’re happy… no scared!

Once you know what you want, once you have a clear vision — you can figure out how to get it.”
